*Comedian Tony Rock turned a routine comedy show into a viral moment when he deftly handled a heckler with a sharp reference to his brother Chris Rock’s infamous 2022 Oscars incident.
As The Root reports, during the performance, Rock was playfully roasting front-row attendees. He teased, “I’m going this way, y’all know y’all next right,” setting his sights on a group celebrating a birthday. When a man announced they were there for his wife, Renee’s 28th birthday, adding, “That’s sis, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, [and] that’s brother right there,” Rock took it as a challenge. “What you wanna fight motherfcka?” he shot back, mimicking the man’s gesture with, “We deep in here!”
The heckler stood, removed his sunglasses, and approached the stage, only for Rock to tell him: “Better sit yo ass down, I ain’t Chris [Rock] motherfcker.” The crowd erupted, and the man, laughing, dapped up Rock, diffusing the tension.
The quip referenced the March 27, 2022, Oscars moment when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on live television. While presenting the Best Documentary Series award, Chris joked about Smith’s wife’s shaved head, saying he couldn’t wait to see her in “G.I. Jane 2.” Smith stormed the stage, slapped Chris, and shouted to keep “his wife’s name out his mouth.”
Smith was banned from Academy events for 10 years following the incident. He later apologized to the Academy and Chris, calling his actions “unacceptable” and “inexcusable.”

Reflecting on the Oscars incident, Smith recently shared its profound impact in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Remi Burgz.
“For the first time in my career, (I was) having to deal with a level of disapproval that I never had to experience,” he said, admitting, “The addiction to the approval of others that I had to dissolve, it was brutal.”
The event prompted soul-searching: “The last few years for me have been really deep reflection,” and “After the Oscars, I shut it down for a minute and really went into the internal work and just taking a big, strong, honest look at myself.”
Smith described it as revealing hidden depths: “It was just like there was a manhole cover over some unexplored areas and the manhole cover came off.”
Despite the fallout, including a 10-year Oscars ban, he found a creative upside: “But then all of a sudden, all these new thoughts, new energies, new creativity came through like a geyser and it started showing up as music.”
