*STARZ‘s latest series” “The Couple Next Door,” takes viewers into the dark underbelly of suburban life, where secrets, desires, and personal tragedies collide. Starring Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), the six-part psychological drama paints a picture of two couples whose lives intertwine in dangerous and unexpected ways.
In an exclusive interview with EURweb, Enoch and Tomlinson opened up about their characters, Pete and Evie, and the complexities of the series. Reflecting on the couple’s dynamic, Tomlinson said,
“They have been together for such a long time, I think, since university. There are some rocky foundations, but initially very happy together,” Tomlison remarked.
However, tragedy strikes when they lose their child, which Tomlinson described as a breaking point: “Their relationship falls apart… Evie sees this new neighbor, Danny, as the perfect escape from her life,” Enoch noted regarding their relationship’s trajectory.

He added: “In some sense, Evie is moving on, moving forward, and Pete’s just trying to hold on and stay where he was… but’s already sort of missed the boat for that, really.”
This divergence of paths exposes buried emotions and repressed dissatisfaction.
The Couple Next Door tackles themes of grief, desire, and the facade of suburban life. For Tomlinson, one of the most intriguing aspects was the contrast between appearances and reality.
“You never know what’s happening around you. You never know what’s going on with people’s lives, and yet they can be living next door to you.”
She emphasized that Evie’s obsession with her new neighbors, Danny and Becka, is fueled by this duality and becomes central to the story’s unraveling.

For Enoch, the series also offered a chance to explore personal identity and self-deception.
“We convince ourselves that we’re a certain way. Still, there’s something that lies beneath… in Pete’s case, he’s not willing to investigate it and all those repressed feelings come to the surface.”
As an investigative journalist, Pete’s professional life adds another layer to the series. His work intersects with neighbor Danny’s secret activities, creating a track that leads to another collision, according to Enoch. This connection complicates their already fraught dynamic, especially as Pete remains unaware of Evie’s growing fascination with Danny.
Enoch and Tomlinson shared that building chemistry with their castmates came easily despite the tension on-screen.

“We became great friends very quickly,” Tomlinson said” “It made tricky conversations very easy because we were all able to be very open and speak plainly.”
She credited director Dries Vos with fostering a collaborative environment that allowed the cast to explore the nuances of their characters.
Tomlinson also highlighted her work with Jessica De Gouw, who plays Becka, on shaping the female characters’ agency” “We did a lot of work just the two of us… to suggest that it was the girls’ idea, that this might be a fun idea. It added an extra layer to their friendship and bond.”
