*Mel Gibson is bringing the continuation of his 2004 blockbuster “The Passion of the Christ” to theaters with “The Resurrection of the Christ,” a two-part cinematic event set for 2027.
Lionsgate announced that Part One will premiere on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, aligning with the film’s spiritual themes. The second installment will follow on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027, exactly 40 days later, per Deadline.
The original film, starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus, was a cultural and financial phenomenon, earning $612.1 million worldwide on a modest $30 million budget. It held the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. until 2024 and remains the top-grossing Christian and independent film ever. “The Passion of the Christ” depicted the final 12 hours of Jesus’ life, drawing from the Gospels and mystical accounts like those of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich.
Details about the plot of “The Resurrection of the Christ” remain confidential, but anticipation is high. Caviezel and Monica Bellucci, who portrayed Mary Magdalene in the original, are expected to reprise their roles. Gibson, who directed and co-wrote the first film with Benedict Fitzgerald, will again helm the project alongside producer Bruce Davey under Icon Productions.
The 2004 film, which also featured Maia Morgenstern as the Blessed Virgin Mary, earned three Oscar nominations for Makeup, Cinematography, and Original Score.
Part One’s release will compete with an untitled Warner Bros. event film, while Part Two will face Sony’s “The Legend of Zelda” adaptation. Lionsgate’s partnership with Gibson extends to distributing the Icon library, including “The Passion of the Christ,” signaling confidence in the sequel’s potential. With its strategic release dates and storied predecessor, “The Resurrection of the Christ” is poised to captivate audiences worldwide.
While appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience earlier this year, Gibson discussed his plans for “The Resurrection of the Christ,” noting that he’s hoping to begin production in 2026.
“I don’t have a start date. I just have to begin pre-production and see what happens. It’s just going to roll in its own time. It’s taking its own time. I thought it was late. It’s taking too long. It’s taking too long. But it’s probably just right. It’s when it’s supposed to be,” he explained.
According to the Hollywood icon, the resurrection story “isn’t linear, so it’s hard to understand… it’s gotta be put in a framework where you answer a few other questions as well, and you have to juxtapose the event itself against everything else so that it makes some kind of sense in a bigger picture.”
