Joy Reid Accuses Media of Fueling Trump’s LA Takeover
*Joy Reid, former MSNBC host, is calling out the mainstream media for boosting Donald Trump’s false narrative about Los Angeles. In her Substack newsletter, she claims the press is helping justify a military presence in California by exaggerating unrest during anti-ICE protests.
Reid says, “the mainstream media at this point, is participating in selling a lie” that L.A. is out of control. She believes this narrative supports Trump’s decision to send in thousands of troops and paint the city as a war zone.
Reid Says Real Story in L.A. Is Very Different
Reid and her team from “The Joy Reid Show” have been in Los Angeles covering the situation firsthand. She says what they saw on the ground was nothing like what media outlets are reporting. “The lies the regime is telling about Los Angeles are easy to disprove,” she wrote.
She described peaceful scenes across the city, from West Hollywood to downtown. According to Reid, the real danger is ICE “terrorizing randomly selected brown people all over the state.”

ICE Raids and Military Force Draw Outrage
Reid said ICE agents were targeting Latino communities in what she described as “military-style” raids. These actions, she claims, are meant to meet a cruel “3,000 brown person a day kidnap quota” for Trump’s immigration goals.
The White House has since deployed 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines. Despite reassurances from Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom, the federal government continues to escalate its response.
Joy Reid Calls Trump’s Actions a “Fake Occupation”
Reid blasted Trump, Pam Bondi, Pete Hegseth, and Kristi Noem for staging what she calls a “fake, dystopian version of Los Angeles.” She says this effort is being used to justify a possible nationwide military lockdown through the Insurrection Act.
“Mainstream journalists are even going so far as to casually inquire about the Insurrection Act,” she noted. This gives officials like Bondi a platform for what Reid called her “Leni Riefenstahl act.”
Mayor Bass and Reid Push Back on Misinformation
“Those of us in Los Angeles understand that the unrest that has happened are a few blocks within the downtown area. It is not all of downtown, and it is not all of the city. Unfortunately, the visuals make it seem as though our entire city is in flames, and it is not the case at all.”

That quote from Mayor Karen Bass highlights the frustration city leaders feel with the national coverage. Reid agrees, saying L.A. is “a perfectly normal, quiet city almost everywhere.”
She argues the real threat to businesses isn’t from protesters, but from the federal forces that are disrupting local life. “Maybe they should stop doing that,” she wrote. “If they do, and withdraw their occupation forces, L.A. and the rest of California can go on about its business.”
