*Former President Barack Obama recently shed light on the toll his political career has taken on his marriage to Michelle Obama, even as the couple continues to face persistent rumors about their relationship.
Speaking with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper on Thursday, Barack admitted, “I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” according to the Daily Beast. The confession comes as Barack has been spotted attending various events solo, fueling speculation about the state of their union. However, insiders have brushed off divorce rumors, insisting that Michelle is simply embracing a new chapter of life outside the political spotlight of Washington, D.C.
Barack acknowledged the strain his two terms in office, spanning 2009 to 2017, placed on their partnership. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” he told Tepper, hinting at efforts to rekindle joy in their relationship.
Meanwhile, Michelle has also addressed the challenges of their high-profile life, offering her perspective during a taping of her new podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, at SXSW. Speaking openly about navigating rumors and negativity, the 61-year-old former first lady reflected on how she and Barack have weathered public scrutiny.
“People always ask me and Barack, how did we stay hopeful in, not just the eight years that we were in the White House, but beyond?” she said, as reported by PEOPLE.

Michelle didn’t shy away from listing the barrage of rumors that have plagued them over the years. “Because, let me tell you, there was a lot of negative energy flipping our way — a lot of rumors, a lot of gossip, a lot of, you know, my husband wasn’t born in this country … we weren’t patriotic, he didn’t get into Harvard,” she added.
Despite these attacks, Michelle emphasized their resilience, crediting their ability to tune out the noise—a practice they’ve passed down to their daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23.
“But through it all, what kept us sane — and we tried to instill this in our daughters — is, you cannot live through social media,” she stated, revealing she has never “once looked at a comment section.”
