*Tyler Perry responded to the criticisms of his films, particularly his latest, “Divorce in the Black,” starring Cory Hardrict and Meagan Good.
On the latest episode of Keke Palmer’s podcast “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,” Perry explained why he ignores negative remarks. He emphasized that he values the positive impact his films have on people’s lives more than any criticism.
“You got to drown all of that out because if you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell,” said Perry, Complex reports.
“I know for a fact that what I’m doing is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing because for everyone who is a critic, I have thousands of emails from people saying ‘This changed my life.’ ‘Oh my God, you know me.’ ‘Oh my God, you saw me, how did you know this about my life, my family?’ So that is what is important to me.”
Perry continued, “We’re talking a large portion of my fans who are disenfranchised who cannot get in the Volvo and go to therapy on the weekend. So you got this highbrow Negro who is all up in the air with his nose up looking at everything, and then you got people like where I come from and me who are grinders who really know what it’s like whose mothers were caregivers for white kids and were maids and housekeepers and all of these beauticians. Don’t discount these people and say that their story don’t matter. Who are you to be able to say which Black story is important or should be told. Get out of here with that bullshit.”
Watch Perry’s full remarks in the YouTube clip above. His comments come after comedian Loni Love called out the filmmaker following the poor reception of “Divorce in the Black,” which earned a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Love accused Perry of not investing in Black writers and directors, arguing that he could create award-worthy projects if he was generous with his resources, The Jasmine Brand reports.
“I love that Tyler is paying Black actors now I wish he would hire Black writers and directors that have experience to help him with his movies,” Loni wrote on X/Twitter.
She added, “He could improve the movies & make them award worthy if he would stop trying to save money by doing the writing and directing himself.”
Meanwhile, over on X/Twitter, one user hilarious mocked a scene from Perry’s new film, watch the short clip below.
