The Pulse of Entertainment: Norman Brown Releases ‘Anything’ Single, Off ‘It Hits Different’ | LISTEN

Norman Brown
Norman Brown releases new album on Shanachie Entertainment.

*“Every day is a new day,” said Grammy-winning Jazz guitarist Norman Brown about the meaning of the title of his new album “It Hits Different” (Shanachie Entertainment).

Norman was promoting the project’s single “Anything” when I interviewed him. This is the Jazz icon’s 14th album. The “It Hits Different” project offers 11 selections. “It Hits Different” features assistance from Lil’ John Roberts (Mary J Blige) on drums, Tom Schuman (Spyro Gyra) on keyboards, James Champion on vocals, and Wirlie Morris as co-writer/vocals.

“You have to step into the new groove,” Norman said about what to expect from the new album. “It features Wirlie Morris, he writes, produces, and has a beautiful voice. He has worked with Charlie Wilson.”

Norman told me he would normally sing, but he was getting over being sick and had to bring in others to be his vocals.

“I’ve done it before (sing),” Norman Brown said about singing now and then on this project. “I want it to be consistent. My manager didn’t know what to do with my vocals.”

The Kansas City-raised Atlanta-based guitarist has worked for the best of the best. Some of those iconic artists include Paul Brown, Michael McDonald, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Gerald Albright, George Benson, Brian McKnight, Dave Koz, Peabo Bryson,  and Chante Moore.

“I…wanted to create the musical essence of love,” said the Jazz legend as we ended our talk.
