*An incident in Ohio has led to an 81-year-old man being charged with the fatal shooting of an Uber driver under the troubling belief that she was part of a complex fraud scheme. The man, identified as William Brock of Clark County, allegedly shot Loletha Hall, aged 61, at his residence on March 25, purportedly suspecting her role in a scam that targeted him for ransom money.

Recently, Brock became a target for scammers who initially tricked him into believing a relative was incarcerated and required thousands for release, eventually escalating their demands to resemble a kidnapping ransom situation, leaving him disconcerted.

Lt. Kristopher Shultz of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office told NBC News that Brock had received a “scam call” earlier that day from a person “purporting to be someone from our courts who informed him a family member was incarcerated and that he had a bond of a significant amount of money.”

Simultaneously, in what appears to be either a cruel coincidence or a coordinated scam, Hall also received deceptive instructions from scammers to retrieve money from Brock’s home.

Upon her arrival, video footage from Hall’s vehicle dashcam reveals a tense scenario with her screaming for help as Brock, armed with a gun, approaches. Despite Hall’s attempts to escape, audio indicates Brock fatally shot her. Watch the dashcam footage below.

Police have since apprehended Brock, assigning charges of murder and abduction, indicating Hall presented no imminent threat to justify the shooting.

Uber has responded to the incident by disabling the account responsible for dispatching Hall and has issued a statement expressing their sympathies and proactive cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

“This is a horrific tragedy and our hearts continue to be with Loletha’s loved ones as they grieve. We have been in contact with law enforcement and remain committed to supporting their investigation.”

Hall, originally from Columbus, Ohio, and recently returned from Charlotte, N.C., is remembered in her obituary as a remarkable cook and a retired employee from the Regional Income Tax Agency. She leaves behind a son, Mario, age 33.
