*The brutal beating of Robert L. Brooks, an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility in New York, has ignited widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
The public outcry follows the release of harrowing body camera footage by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. The footage, made public on December 27, depicts a distressing confrontation on December 9, during which officers inflicted severe violence upon Brooks just hours before he was pronounced dead.
The video evidence shows Brooks, 43, handcuffed and seated on the edge of a medical gurney, seemingly trying to catch his breath.
Despite his calm demeanor, he was subjected to relentless punches and kicks from correctional officers. Blood can be seen streaming from his injuries, illustrating the brutality of the assault. Despite a conscious effort to restrain the situation, Brooks was later transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of December 10.

Attorney General James expressed her commitment to transparency and accountability in her statement on the tragic incident.
“Law enforcement professionals must be held to the highest standards of accountability, and I am committed to providing New Yorkers with the transparency they deserve,” she stated.
James’ office is dedicated to ensuring that those responsible face justice, and she extended her condolences to Brooks’ family during this difficult time.
The officers involved in the altercation include Sergeant Glenn Trombly and Correction Officers Michael Along, Michael Fisher, and Matthew Galliher.
The released footage is part of James’ ongoing effort to enhance transparency in special investigations; however, the lack of audio due to the failure of the officers to activate their cameras during the assault raises questions about the accountability of those involved, the Afro reported.
“Nobody deserves to get killed, especially by correctional officers…they are supposed to protect,” wrote Brooks Jr. in a Facebook post on Dec. 17. “They are trying to hide and clean up evidence. They didn’t think my dad was loved by many. We are not going to let you all rock. We are coming for justice.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also voiced her outrage over the incident. In her statement, she emphasized the responsibility of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to safeguard those in their custody. Following Brooks’ death, she demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident and instructed the DOCCS Commissioner to terminate the employment of all 14 officers involved.
Rev. Al Sharpton, a prominent activist and founder of the National Action Network, likened the incident to other high-profile cases of police brutality against Black individuals.
“The footage of Robert Brooks’ death is as horrifying as what we saw when George Floyd, Tyre Nichols, and countless other Black men and women have been killed by law enforcement,” he stated. Sharpton called for not only the termination of the officers involved but also appropriate criminal charges, reinforcing the need for justice and accountability in such cases.
