*Going into “Mean Girls” I was expecting to dislike it. It’s a known fact that iterations tend to lack the appeal of the originals. But, I was pleasantly surprised.

Of course, “Mean Girls” the musical does not have the freshness and surprise of the original, but it was enjoyable. It also passes my litmus test, meaning I would pay to see it.

Changes were made to accommodate the current pop culture climate—some good and some not. No spoilers here.

However, the schoolyard scene of students imitating animals did not make the grade in the remake.

Yet, moviegoers can still relish in the movie’s revenge tactics. Fortunately, the music is not a cringe session for the captive audiences.

“Mean Girls” follows new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) as she is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by popular girls, “The Plastics.”

The conniving queen, Regina George (Reneé Rapp), controls the “Plastics.” Her minions are Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika).

However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself in Regina’s crosshairs.

As Cady sets out to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.

Sixteen-year-old Cady arrived at her new suburban American home and school from Africa. In Kenya, she was homeschooled and consequently not prepared for the rude awakening she would encounter at North Shore High School.

With Screenplay by Tina Fey, “Mean Girls” is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. “Mean Girls” also stars Tim Meadows, Tina Fey, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, and Ashley Park.

Unfortunately, there were no New York press screenings for “The Book of Clarence.”
