Jonathan Majors Reacts to Outrage Over His Coretta Scott King Remarks

We reported earlier that Coretta’s daughter, Dr. Bernice King, seemingly reacted to Majors’ comments about her mother. During his recent interview with “Good Morning America,” the actor said his girlfriend, Meagan Good, “held me down” like Coretta amid his domestic violence trial last month.

Majors made similar remarks about how Coretta supported her husband (Martin Luther King Jr.) to his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari in a recorded audio that was released during the ex-couple’s domestic violence trial in December.

“My mother wasn’t a prop,” Bernice captioned a photo of Coretta on X/Twitter on Jan. 9. “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.”

Majors responded to Bernice in a new statement via TMZ, saying, “My intention was to convey my utmost respect for Coretta Scott King, her achievements, and both her personal legacy and the one she shares with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King.”

Majors called Coretta “a great woman, a very important figure in American and world history, and someone both Meagan and I are inspired by and deeply admire.”

Majors also addressed his Coretta remarks to ABC News, saying, “It was me trying to give the knowledge of what it is I’m aspiring to be. These great men… Martin [Luther King Jr.], President Obama… And trying to give a reference point to that.”

He continued, “I was attempting – and I did a terrible job at it apparently – I was attempting to motivate, to enlighten, to give perspective as to what it is I was hoping to get out of the relationship. I think that’s fair.”

Majors is facing up to a year behind bars after being found guilty of assault and harassment against Jabbari. His sentencing is scheduled for February 6.
