*A day after the 2024 Presidential Election, individuals in North and South Carolina reported receiving racist text messages that falsely claimed they had been “selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation.”
Some of the messages identify people by name, threaten forced servitude, and include “plantation group” numbers. Several online users speculate the messages could be from left-leaning individuals aiming to incite fear. “All that’s missing at the bottom of the email is “this is MAGA country,” X user @TheHoleTweet wrote, adding “this smells a whole lot like Jessie Smollett 2.0.”
Other reactions on X included “This is clearly a hacker or a foreign adversary trying to sow division.” and “This is someone on the left being hyperbolic and stoking fear.”
Clemson University responded by stating that several students reported receiving variations of the offensive texts.
“The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) has received reports of students receiving text messages containing disparaging language from unrecognized numbers,” reads the statement. “These numbers have been determined to be associated with online spoofing sites. CUPD is actively investigating the matter and working with state partners to identify the source of the messages.”

The messages conveniently began to circulate the day it was confirmed that Trump would be returning to the White House next year after winning the election. The recent election results mark a sweeping Republican victory, described as a massive red wave that goes beyond a typical landslide. Republicans have won the presidency, the popular vote, majorities in both the Senate and House, as well as a majority of governorships and control of most state legislatures.
When congresswoman Jasmine Crockett shared the disturbing text on X, actor Isiah Washington responded: “Ask your Feds why they are doing this bullshit. You’re in on it and no reasonable Conservative or Trump supporter is buying this nonsense. GTFOH! Try something different, like getting outside and do something about what 75% of Americans voted for you low IQ person.”

TheFBI stated on X that the agency “is aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.”
“As always, we encourage members of the public to report threats of physical violence to local law enforcement authorities,” FBI added.
