*The sensational South Korean drama “Moving” was the most-watched K-Drama ever on Disney+ and Hulu last year, and we caught up with the creative mastermind behind this thrilling ride of a series, director Park Inje.

According to a press release, “Moving” was named the “best superhero series” on TV by Rolling Stone in 2023. The 20-episode series is adapted from the hit webtoon written by Kang Full and directed by Inje (Kingdom), who earned a nomination for a Critics Choice Award for “Moving.”

The series centers on a group of innocent teenagers with superpowers who go head-to-head against some of the world’s most powerful governments. The cast includes Ryu Seungryong, Han Hyojoo, Zo Insung, Lee Jungha, Go Younjung, and Kim Dohoo.

Check out the trailer below.

During the casting process for the project, Inje told Screen Rant that he “probably met all the up-and-coming actors in Korea in their early twenties.”

“Previous to this project, I hadn’t really worked with younger actors before. In the casting process,” he shared.

“The main differences between the show and the webtoon are the original characters in the show,” Inje told Forbes in a new interview.

“So it’s characters like Frank or the bus driver, Gye-do, who don’t appear in the webtoon. Also the webtoon comes in shorter, more bite-sized segments, whereas Moving, the show, is 20 episodes,” he continued. “It’s lengthier and goes more in depth. But at the end of the day, I think that both the webtoon and the show have the same through line, the same message of familial love. I think that’s what they have in common.”

We spoke exclusively to Park Inje (with his translator) about the casting process and the qualities he looked for in the actors portraying the superheroes. He also discussed the innovative VFX techniques used in the series.

“I would say that I’m still in the process of learning about VFX,” the filmmaker told EUR. “So I looked to a lot of works from Hollywood, whether it be old, like Star Wars or Superman, to more recent, like Marvel, as a reference, and it was a lot of fun to look back at these works and think of how we will create our own original visual language for this.”

Inje added, “I think it was Black Widow where they were sort of making fun of…, why do superheroes always land in such a cool way with their legs open and it’s this big moment, and when we were shooting our landing scene…I think we kind of understood why superheroes do it in that way because it shows their strength and their power. So, I think in our own interpretation of superheroes, we came to understand why certain tropes tend to exist in previous works that have been made.”

When asked how he envisions the series contributing to the international appeal of Korean content, especially in the superhero genre, Inje told us, “What really attracted me to this project is that… there’s obviously so many genres in Hollywood, but in Korea, there aren’t as many diverse genres,” he said. “I really wanted to explore a genre that hadn’t really been seen before in Korea. I don’t know if, because of Moving, there will be a lot more superhero content or content that utilizes the technology of digital characters, but I’m looking forward to seeing the doors that Moving opens.”

Inje further explained the use of digital characters during our conversation, watch what he had to say via the clip below.

“Moving” is now streaming on Hulu.
