*Since it wasn’t televised live, you may not have been aware that the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys was held this past weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Among the winners were Barack Obama, Jay Z, and Keke Palmer among others. The show, originally scheduled for last September, was delayed because of the writers and actors strikes.

Keke Palmer won an Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host for NBC’s “Password” – the first time that the category has been part of the Primetime Emmys after moving from the Daytime Awards.

By winning the award, Palmer made history by becoming the first Black woman to win in that category.

“To be acknowledged at different levels is just awesome, was Palmer’s reaction to the win.” She added that she had wanted to broaden her career aside from acting and performing. The talented performer added that Jimmy Fallon had been an inspiration, and there was nothing greater for her than bringing people together. Palmer said, “I looked to him, and what he’s been able to do and just bring people together in a wholesome yet cool, fun way.”

History was also made by Stephanie Filo as she was the first editor to be nominated in a single year for three different shows (“A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “History of the World Part II”) and the first Black female editor to be nominated three times in a single year. She won the Emmy for picture editing for variety programming for HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” Backstage she shouted out series creator Robin Thede for putting women and women of color “in front and behind the camera.”

“The 1619 Project,” which came under attack by conservatives as “woke-ism,” won the Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series Emmy on Sunday at the Creative Arts ceremony. The six-part Hulu series was executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, Roger Ross Williams, Shoshanna Guy, and Hannah Nicole Jones who also wrote the original “Project” for the NY Times. Jones also hosted the TV series.

Barack Obama, the former US president is now the recipient of his 6th Emmy. This time he won a statuette for outstanding narration for his Netflix documentary series “Working: What We Do All Day.” He is also a producer on the project alongside his wife and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Another repeat winner was Jay-Z who took home his second Emmy trophy for Outstanding Directing for a variety special for 2023’s “Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna,” which he co-directed with Hamish Hamilton. The show also won Outstanding Production Design for a variety special. Jigga is 2 for 2 because in 2022 he took home an Emmy as an executive producer of the Super Bowl Halftime Show starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent.

Wrapping things up, we’d be remiss if we didn’t show some love to Jasmine Guy, Sam Richardson, and Storm Reid.
