*Recently, it was announced that Hip Hop group NWA will receive the Grammy Life Achievement Award next month. While some are celebrating this honor, one NC activist, Paul Scott, is outraged.
Scott, a Durham-based activist and minister is demanding that the Grammys cancel the award.
“What exactly is NWA’s lifetime achievement, ” asks Scott, “sadistic misogyny, sending a generation of young Black men to early graves or making it socially acceptable for White America to use the N-word without getting a beatdown?”
Scott accuses the group of being responsible for the current state of Hip Hop in 2024.
“If there was no NWA, there would be no drill music, ” says Scott. “NWA ushered in an era of terror.”
Also, troubling to Scott is the fact that the Grammy Awards show takes place during Black History Month and follows a year when the world was celebrating the birth of Hip Hop.
“The contradiction of honoring one of the pioneers of the birth of Hip Hop (Kool Herc) while at the same time honoring the group that tried to kill the culture is mindboggling, ” says Scott.
A community activist who walks through the hoods in his community passing out free Black history books to African American youth, Scott is also concerned about the effect of honoring NWA will have on them, especially the message it is sending young Black girls.
Referring to NWA’s song “She Swallowed It,” Scott says, “Before Sexxy Red, NWA was glorifying 14-year-old girls giving head.”
