*In a recent exclusive interview with EUR, actress Maya Erskine and showrunner Francesca Sloane provided exclusive insights into the highly anticipated Prime Video series, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
Diving into the intricacies of the characters’ relationships and the delicate balance between spy escapades and personal connections. Erskine and Sloane offered a glimpse into the creative process that brought this iconic spy couple back to life. The series stars Erskine and Donald Glover as two strangers who land jobs with a spy agency that offers them a life of espionage, wealth, and travel – with a catch, new identities in an arranged marriage.
Sloane and Glover are the visionaries behind the series. The two have previously worked together on the hit FX series, “Atlanta.” Sloane shared her excitement about showcasing the “B side of a tape of a spy show.” She emphasized the focus on intimacy.
“We wanted them to start with a lot of walls up and feel like two people genuinely first meeting and having to merge lives,” stated Sloane. She revealed that the goal was to gradually chip away at these walls sincerely, providing viewers with a unique and deeper perspective on the characters’ relationship dynamics.
Erskine expressed her enthusiasm for exploring the multifaceted nature of her role. “I loved that she had so many walls up…you get to see a big trajectory from a character,” she explained.
Addressing the challenge of balancing spy activities with the personal aspects of the characters, Sloane shared a creative approach taken by the team.
“We wanted to hit every single checklist of every spy trope we could imagine,” she said. The team aimed to subvert expectations by incorporating relationship milestones, creating what they humorously called the “spy sandwich.” This concept was the sweet spot where spy elements and relationship dynamics seamlessly merged.
When discussing the physicality of the series, Erskine shared that there was ”a lot of hand-to-hand combat.” She said she embraced the challenge of “learning how to handle a gun, overcoming her fear, and finally taking on a role where she wasn’t portraying a teenager.”
Sloane shared that Maya accidentally performed one of her stunts in one scene.
“At one point, we were doing a ski mobile thing where the stunt double was supposed to do the stunt on the ski mobile, and Maya just started taking off. And we were just like, keep rolling. Keep rolling, rolling,” she recalled. “We waited to see what would happen, and it worked.”
“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” makes its debut exclusively on Prime Video on February 2nd.
