*President Joe Biden, in his first televised remarks about halting his reelection bid, addressed the nation on Wednesday, July 24.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Biden, 81, assured the public that he intends to serve out his term, stating, “Over the next six months, I will continue to focus on doing my job as president.”
“This sacred task of protecting our Union is not about me,” he said, PEOPLE reports. “It’s about you. Your families. Your futures.”
Biden also emphasized his support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who is 22 years younger than him.
“I decided that the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation,” he said. “It’s the best way to unite our nation. There is a time and place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices, and that time and place is now.”
The president noted that Harris is “experienced, she’s tough, she’s capable,” adding, “… she’s been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country.”
Biden called on Americans to “choose between moving forward or backward,” as it relates to former president Donald Trump.
“Between hope and hate,” he added. “Between unity and division. Do we still believe in honestly, decency, respect, freedom, justice and democracy?”
Elsewhere in his speech, Biden said, “The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule, the people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America is in your hands. Keep the faith, and remember who we are. We’re the United States of America, and there is nothing beyond our capacity if we do it together.”
