Variety reports that the tension started in June 2022 when Carmichael criticized Chappelle amid backlash for making jokes about the transgender community.

“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro?” Carmichael asked during a GQ magazine profile at the time. “That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans shi*t? It’s an odd hill to die on. And it’s like, ‘Hey, bro. Who the f*ck are you? Who do you f*ck? What do you like to do?’”

He added, “Childish jokes aside, who the f*ck are you? It’s just kind of played. But he’s choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him.”

Carmichael came out as gay in his April 2022 HBO special “Rothaniel,” and it earned a backhanded compliment from Chappelle. In his new Esquire interview, Jerrod said Dave “referred to it as the bravest special for 1996.”

Carmichael noted that Chappelle didn’t handle the criticism about his legacy gracefully.

“He took it as ‘F*ck Dave Chappelle,’ because he’s an egomaniac,” Carmichael told the publication. “He wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some sh*t.”

Carmichael told Esquire that Chappelle is “not revealing anything personal about himself and he’s removed from what he’s talking about, and I think he’s smarter than that and deeper than that and has more interesting thoughts.”

Carmichael is making the press rounds to support his new HBO series “Jarrod Carmichael Reality Show.” He said previously that he’s “trying to maintain being truthful on camera.”

HBO describes the reality show as “a darkly funny documentary series about Jerrod’s tumultuous quest for love, sex, and truth.”

The “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” debuted March 29, with new episodes airing Fridays on HBO and Max. Watch the trailer below.
