Composer Derrick Skye’s Musical Journey: Bridging Cultures Through Music | EURexclusiveWATCH

*Los Angeles-based composer Derrick Skye sat down with me for an exclusive interview, offering insights into his remarkable journey and the inspiration behind his latest composition, “To Be a Horizon.”

Skye, whose latest work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) and will be premiered by the orchestra on April 20 at Glendale’s Alex Theatre, and April 21 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, is becoming a rising star in classical music, blending diverse cultural influences into his work.

During our interview, Skye shared how his background shaped his musical path. Understanding the importance of various genres, he developed a deep appreciation for music’s ability to transcend boundaries and foster understanding between different cultures. This perspective laid the foundation for his unique approach to composition, which integrates musical practices from around the world into his music.

“To Be A Horizon,” represents a culmination of Skye’s artistic vision. Described as a “musical travelogue,” the composition seamlessly combines elements of West African music and dance, Persian music theory, Balkan music theory, and Hindustani classical music with formal Western classical motifs.

Part of a larger orchestral suite entitled “Prisms, Cycles, Leaps,” the piece bridges the space between multiple music cultures, reflecting Skye’s diverse knowledge and commitment to cultural inclusivity.

“Doing art that’s transcultural allows me to take all of the beautiful musical languages that have inspired my life and have touched my soul, and let them intertwine with each other within my art so that my language becomes something unique,” said Derrick.

Throughout the interview, Skye emphasized his passion for exploring different sounds and getting inspiration from different parts of the world. He shared his experiences collaborating with artists of different backgrounds, highlighting the transformative impact of creative collaboration.
