*If you haven’t heard, the Denver Police Department has successfully recovered the stolen bronze artwork from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. monument at City Park.

Watch the video above for background on the theft and watch the video below for the story behind the recovery and the difficulty in reassembling the pieces that were stolen.

Last Friday, the large bronze plaque, church angel, and unity torch were all found, with the plaque being cut into four pieces. The DPD is now seeking the public’s help in locating and apprehending the responsible individuals.

Although two suspects are believed to be involved, according to CBS News Colorado, only one has been identified as 67-year-old Herman Duran, and neither of whom is currently in custody.

The monument was vandalized on Feb. 18, and the stolen items were discovered at a scrap metal business in the Denver area. The same individuals had also sold seven stolen items from the Joseph Addison Thatcher Memorial fountain in City Park.

The stolen items have since been returned to the artist Edward Dwight, who designed the monument titled “I Have a Dream.” Despite the recovery, fundraising efforts for improved monument lighting and security will continue.

While the Denver police initially suspected a bias-motivated crime, they now believe it was not the case.
