*Mississippi Representative Bennie Thompson, a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, proposed a bill in mid-April to remove Secret Service protection for convicted felons.
As Newsweek reports, this legislation, supported by several Democratic lawmakers, has drawn criticism from Donald Trump’s supporters, especially following the recent attempt on Trump’s life.
According to a source from Thompson’s office, the bill targets anyone sentenced for a felony who would otherwise receive Secret Service protection.
“Nobody should have special treatment, and that happens to include the former president,” the insider said in April.
On May 30, the former president was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records in his hush money trial. His sentencing was set to occur last week but will likely happen in mid-September.
Trump was nearly assassinated at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday and later stated that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”
The 20-year-old shooter was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The fringe liberals would have you believe that he was a staunch Republican, but according to multiple reports, Crooks recently registered as a Republican after having donated to Democrats. In Pennsylvania, only registered party members can participate in a political party’s primary election, and the presumption is that Crooks registered as a Republican to vote against Trump in the primary.
Crooks was killed at the scene of the assassination attempt, authorities said.
“Remember, if @BennieGThompson and the Democrats got their way, my dad would be dead right now,” Donald Trump Jr. said in a post to X on Sunday.
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene added: “If these Democrats got their way, President Trump would have been killed.”
After the assassination attempt on Trump, Thompson turned to social media to note that there was “no room in American democracy for political violence.”
“I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident,” he said. “I am glad the former president is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.”
Meanwhile, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi pushed back against reports that claim the Trump campaign requested and was denied additional security.
“In fact, recently the U.S. Secret Service added protective resources and capabilities to the former president’s security detail,” Guglielmi said, per Newsweek.
“The former president, and the current president, are commonly subject to threats, Guglielmi said in a statement, adding: “The U.S. Secret Service takes threats seriously, and it takes actions based on those threats as warranted.”
“While we can’t get into specifics, the U.S. Secret Service adds additional resources for all campaign cycles, including manpower and a variety of protective technology. This addition of resources happens for all election cycles and is part of our candidate nominee operations section, also known as CNOS.”
