Michael Jackson was accused of wanting to be white nearly the entirety of his career, and predominantly by other Black Americans despite proven testimonials by dermatologists and later, an autopsy confirming his vitiligo and Discoid Lupus. It wasn’t because Black audiences no longer respected MJ, it was a trauma response to white supremacy and its sustaining impact on pop culture and beauty standards. The reactions to these photos deserve more nuance and interrogation than simply dismissing them as hateful and jealous.
