*When it comes to prenuptial agreements, the topic can be a deal breaker for married couples. But believe it or not, there is a benefit to them, according to Mrs. Dow Jones, a TikTok financial expert who is basing her support of prenups on the document created for Jay-Z and Beyonce. In 2008, the year the power couple tied the know, they signed a prenup.

Citing Business Insider, Madame Noire, detailed that the prenup ensured Beyonce’s and Jay-Z’s assets remained separate and required financial transparency. In the agreement, the former Destiny’s Child singer is granted $5 million per child she has with Jay-Z, $10 million if their marriage ends before two years, and $1 million for every year they stay married up to 15 years.

In addition to the prenup, Jay-Z and Beyonce signed a postnuptial agreement addressing how their assets would be distributed and their children’s trust fund.

Acknowledging people’s negative perception of prenups being an encourager of divorce, Mrs. Dow Jones compared the agreement to a health insurance

“Beyoncé and Jay-Z know that prenups are like health insurance,” she explained in a TikTok video posted on March 9. “You don’t get health insurance expecting or wanting to get sick, but having it means you’re protected in case it happens. Prenups are the same; they’re just marriage insurance. You want yours to last forever, but you’re protected no matter what.”

@mrsdowjones There’s a lot of people who think getting a prenup means you’re not in it for the long haul – but it’s time to rethink that narrative! Beyoncé and jay z ❤️ prenups and you should too. Even if you’re not worth 1.6 billion, they are worth considering! They force you to be open about your finances with your future spouse and think through your future. Will you get a prenup? As couples enter the realm of marriage, Mrs. Dow Jones emphasized the importance of prenups, especially when one person may not be as financially solid as their mate.

“And they’re especially important if you’re marrying someone with debt because, without one, you could be responsible for repaying their loans if you get divorced, even if they incurred before you got married,” she continued.

A good prenup can be a great asset for marriage, according to Madame Noire, which encouraged Black women to introduce the agreement into the union via insight from attorneys. With an attorney, women can get a solid take on why they should incorporate prenups into their marriage as well as how to introduce the notion to their partner.

Black women can especially benefit from prenups, given the changing nature of financial statistics. Inadequate awareness of a couple’s financial standings and protecting assets are the two main reasons for prenups, Madame Noire reports.

A 2022 Pew Research Poll, the cited referenced found that married Black women who graduated college are more likely to be in egalitarian (shared responsibilities) and breadwinner-wife marriages than other races. The reason behind this lies in Black women outearning their husbands.

In 2018, a Bowling Green State University study revealed an eye-opening stat that Black women were the sole race group that had a higher divorce rate than marriage rate.

Three years later, Consumer Reports found that Black families have significantly “less wealth than white families — a median net worth of $24,100 compared with $188,200.”

So, what do you think? Is Mrs. Dow Jones on to something with the benefit of getting a prenup? Or is it better to navigate finances in a marriage on your terms? Weigh in below.
