*”The Little Mermaid’s” live-action reimagining grossed $95.5 million in its 3-day opening during Memorial Day Weekend. The total domestic box office is $186.2 million, and it appears unlikely that the film will take in $1 billion.

Many industry experts believe the animated feature has destroyed Disney’s billion-dollar box office trend.

As Screen Rant reports, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, 2019’s The Lion King, and 2019’s Aladdin all earned $1 billion at the box office. The Jungle Book made $966.6 million and Mulan is an exception because it was released on Disney+ due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Little Mermaid has (so far) made a reported $414.2 million. The box office is mostly made up of moviegoers in the United States and Canada.

We reported previously via CNN that “The Little Mermaid” bombed in China and South Korea amid racist critiques in some quarters over the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey as the main character Ariel.

It brought in just 19.5 million yuan ($2.7 million) in its first five days, compared with 142 million yuan (nearly $20 million) for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in the first five days of that film’s opening, according to Chinese box office tracker Endata.

In South Korea, “The Little Mermaid” has grossed $4.4 million since May 24.

Here’s more from screenrant.com:

Although The Little Mermaid isn’t a box office bomb, it is probably going to end up a financial failure, meaning that the film has severe implications for the future of Disney’s live-action remakes. Deadline estimates that if the film’s box office is around $400 million (which it currently is), it can be expected to lose around $20 million. This would mark The Little Mermaid as the first live-action remake to fail outside of the COVID-19 pandemic, with it possibly shaking up Disney’s future plans. Because of this, it’s possible that The Little Mermaid could change everything.

You can expect “The Little Mermaid” to arrive on Disney+ later this year, and it is likely to break streaming numbers.
