Sykes, Hicks, Mike Epps, Page Hurwitz, and Niles Kirchner executive produce the series created by Regina Y. Hicks and Wanda Sykes, with the two serving as co-showrunners.

“The Upshaws” first premiered in 2021. Skyes once compared the comedy to other popular Black sitcoms of the 1980s and 1990s, such as  “227” and “Roc.”

“There’s nothing on like it,” she said, during a recent interview on the Desus & Mero Showtime program, which is now no more. “It was a time when we had working class Black family shows. Then all of a sudden it was just a bunch of Black people in suits and fancy cars, or gangsters. There’s nothing in between. So we are the working class Black family.”
