*The mother of the Houston robber who was fatally shot by a vigilante is speaking out about how her son vowed he would do better.

The incident occurred at Ranchito #4 Taqueria in southwest Houston on Jan. 5 and was captured on surveillance video. Police had been searching for the customer who shot the robber, identified as 30-year-old Eric Eugene Washington, SandraRose reports.

According to KHOU-11, the unidentified vigilante was questioned by homicide detectives, then released without charges. The case is reportedly headed to a grand jury to determine if the gunman will face criminal charges.

As we reported previously, Thomas Nixon, a former Houston Police Dept. officer, now attorney, explained to KPRC-TV that the shooter was within his rights to protect himself.

Washington’s mother, Corine Goodman, explained to FOX 26 News that her son was trying to get his life back on track after getting out of prison. He also welcomed a newborn son 4 months ago.

“What he did I don’t condone. I don’t,” Goodman said. “He knew better. He never said anything or made me think he would go this route.”

The video surveillance footage shows Washington entering the restaurant with a black mask and gun drawn and demanding money from customers who were enjoying their meals. However, as Washington goes to exit the establishment after collecting his loot, one of the customers pulls out a gun, and shoots him nine times.

Goodman wants to know why the man had to shoot her son so many times.

“I don’t hate him,” she said of the gunman, “but I wanna know why didn’t you stop?” Goodman continued. “You abused him. He was dead already. And that hurts.”

“He’s not the monster people picture him to be,” she said of her son.

In 2015, Washington was convicted in connection to the fatal shooing of a 62-year-old store owner. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and released on parole after serving 7 years. As SandraRose reports, in December 2022, he was charged with assaulting his baby mama and later bonded out of jail.

The customer who shot Washington has lawyered up and this shooting “will burden him for the rest of his life,” the man’s attorney said of his client.
