*Lil Nas X is catching heat for a tweet in which he wrote “where do the gays be in africa i wanna come there”.

Fans quickly slammed the rapper for being insensitive amid reports that a new law in Uganda is punishing homosexuality.

The Ugandan parliament passed an anti-LGBTQ law on Wednesday that aims to punish queer-identifying people for up to 20 years in prison or the death penalty in cases of “aggravated homosexuality”.

“Congratulations,” said Anita Among, the speaker of the parliament, Time reports. “Whatever we are doing, we are doing it for the people of Uganda.”

Volker Türk, the U.N.‘s High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni not to sign the “draconian” bill into law.

“If signed into law by the President, it will render lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Uganda criminals simply for existing, for being who they are. It could provide carte blanche for the systematic violation of nearly all of their human rights and serve to incite people against each other,” said Türk.

Homosexuality is reportedly banned in 30 African countries.

After Lil Nas X responded to the law on Twitter, many fans and followers were quick to slam the “Old Town Road” rapper for sending a dangerous message. One user wrote, “This is so insensitive especially after Uganda just announced the harsh punishment of even identifying as being LGBTQ”.
