Hollywood Producer Evette Vargas Unpacks New Supernatural Series ‘Confessions’ | EUR Exclusive!

CONFESSIONS – OFFICIAL TRAILER from Digital-Reign on Vimeo.

*We spoke to veteran Hollywood, write/director/producer Evette Vargas about her award-winning intellectual property “Confessions,” a one-hour, supernatural, sci-fi thriller series, that explores the “multi-layered facets of sin and atonement,” per the official synopsis

Vargas explained to EUR’s Ny MaGee that the series is inspired by “the confessional booth” as part of her Catholic-Latina upbringing.

The idea of confessing your sins out loud to a priest who represents God, and then, receiving a penance in the form of prayers is powerful. How many Hail Marys? How many different prayers? And sometimes taking actions to right our wrongs. Through this process, the promise is that you cleanse your soul and atone for your sins. I have always been fascinated with that idea,” she said.

Here’s the “Confessions” synopsis: Tormented by a centuries-long love triangle, a Spanish Conquistador turned angel commits a sin in heaven and is banished to earth. Five-hundred years later, he must fulfill his penance of compelling sinners to atone for their untold sins, to reunite with the woman he loves.

Vargas noted that the lead character, Manuel, is a former conquistador who “doesn’t know how many sinners he must compel to atone, in order to fulfill his penance and return to Heaven to be with the woman he loves — his soulmate, Lara. Lara is an Aztec indigenous woman whom he married, while he was a conquistador. But instead of ravaging her village, she and he joined forces to save the village.”

But there’s just one problem … Manuel’s best friend Juan is also in love with Lara. “So, Juan sends Manuel off on a mission. While Manuel is away, Juan moves in on Lara, and while she defends herself, he accidentally kills her. Then, Juan frames Manuel for her murder,” Vargas explained.

We don’t want to spoil too much of the tale, but Vargas tells us that when Manuel comes back to earth as an angel, “he gets into Juan’s head and haunts him. Juan ends up committing suicide,” and “that’s the sin that Manuel did while he was in angel form, and that’s why he was banished from Heaven and given this penance,” she revealed.

“Confessions” takes place in the present day, and Vargas said viewers get to “visit this backstory.”

“Manuel wants nothing more than to return to Heaven and reunite with his wife Lara, who he believes is there. But in the present day, he’s lonely. He’s been here for 500 years. He’s having a crisis of faith, and he has two confidants,” Vargas said. “One is a female priest who knows his entire story, and his backstory. One of the things that Manuel must do here on Earth is to confess for his own sin. But he isn’t ready to do that,”

According to Vargas, the engine driving the story forward is “Manuel disrupting the lives of the sinners and leading them to repentance.”

In each episode or just about each episode, we will meet a new sinner,” Vargas shared. “There will always be a mystery. What is their sin? Will they repent? We’re not quite going to know. And there’s always be a twist we did not see coming.

Yes, we’ll explore the Seven Deadly Sins, as well as many more. Further, the sins themselves will be unique. We’re diving into the possibilities and realities of life,” she explained.

As Vargas put it, “Confessions” is a “half-century-old epic love story” about “these two energies” who were “always meant to be together,” she said, adding, “And regardless of what time-period it may be, or what life cycle they may find themselves in, they’re meant to meet again. And hopefully, learn from their past and get it right.”

Vargas described “Confessions” as “a multicultural series” with Latino actors leading the cast.

This is inspiring in terms of the genre and the narrative. We don’t often see people of color in a supernatural drama, or supernatural thriller. I’m incredibly excited about our people being represented and able to see themselves in this kind of story,” she said.

“I’m also excited about the conversation of sin and atonement driving introspection. The people who have watched the proof-of-concept short, share that they’ve been compelled to take a deeper dive into their relationship with redemption. That it’s thought-provoking.”

Vargas hopes “Confessions” inspires viewers to “come to grips” with their personal “shortcomings.” To date, “Confessions” has won seven awards at film festivals and will be pitched after the Hollywood Writers Strike. The interactive animated series will premiere in November on the Serialify app.

“I believe it will allow people to examine their lives, genuinely be inspired to move forward with purpose, and hopefully get it right this time,” Vargas said.
