Director Justin Simien Dishes On New Disney ‘Haunted Mansion’ Film | Watch

When you hear haunted mansion, Disney theme parks are probably the first thing that comes to mind. Or the 2003 film starring Eddie Murphy.

“Haunted Mansion” isn’t the typical remake with little to no changes. Director Justin Simien and writer Katie Dippold made sure to bring a fresh take to the film.

They created a new story while keeping some of the elements from the rides and 2003 film. In this version, Gabby, played by Rosario Dawson, is a single mother trying to start a new life with her young son. She invest in an old run-down mansion located in New Orleans. After experiencing a run-in with multiple ghosts she enlists the help of a priest (Owen Wilson) and a ghost tour guide (Laketh Standfiled).

Standfield’s character Ben, is skeptical of the idea of ghosts. He only becomes a guide to fulfill his late wife’s work. As Gabby assembles her team of ghost experts they encounter an unexpected journey of healing and self-revelations. Especially, Ben who never dealt with the grief of losing his wife.

The film gets deep. We spoke with Simien, about his vision and the balance between horror and real-life experiences.

“I go to some of these Pixar films (for reference) like “Coco” and “Up.” These movies don’t pull their punches, there’s loss of life. They don’t treat children like they can’t handle the realities of life,” said Simien.

This film is not a fluffy horror film with no substance. “Haunted Mansion” is layered with multiple elements such as comedy, drama, and mystery. It’s an entertaining film for all ages.

“I was laughing and I was crying my eyes out. I had such an unexpected journey,” said Simien in response to the script. Knowing there could be a lot of distractions from the plot he made sure to protect the heart of the story.

Simien also spoke about his thoughts on the actor’s strike and the threat of the use of artificial intelligence.

“I have always said actors are the most important special effect on screen. And it is the most important thing you have to protect I think, in a movie.

What makes this film good is you get more than you expected. You find yourself relating to the characters. The emotions the actors brought to this film made it worth the watch. Prepare to laugh, cry and let out a little scream during the scary parts of “Haunted Mansion” when it hits theaters Friday, July 28th.
