Writer/Director Courtney Glaudé on How He Got Mo’Nique to Star in His Feature Debut ‘The Reading’ | Video Exclusive

*We caught up with award-winning writer-director Courtney Glaudé to dish on his new thriller “The Reading,” starring Mo’Nique and now streaming on BET+.

Per the official synopsis: “The thriller follows widowed author Emma Leeden (Mo’Nique) as she agrees to a staged reading by 19-year-old Sky Brown (Chastity Sereal) to promote her new book “Invasion,” which details the horrific and traumatic loss of her family during an attack she barely survived. Quickly, those involved in the staged reading learn that Sky’s spiritual connection is real and an unexpected evil emerges in a house they can’t escape.”

The Reading is a rollercoaster of a project that I am thrilled to see come to life,” Glaudé previously said in a statement.

“I am a fan of the surgical performance by Mo’Nique, and the love and commitment from the entire cast during the pandemic. I appreciate the dedication to bringing this, as I was told, “sick” vision of mine to the screen; and of course Lee Daniels for being crazy enough to Executive Produce the project and believing in me. I can’t wait for the audience to think they know, but have no idea what’s going to happen. I promise you…it’s crazy,” he added.

Mo’Nique stars in “The Reading” opposite Chastity Sereal, Denisha Hardeman, Ian Haywood, Charlene Brown, Lisa Alavi, and Sara Alavi. Lee Daniels serves as an executive producer on the film, which marks a reunion for him and Mo’Nique. The two previously worked together on the critically acclaimed film “Previous,” for which Mo won an Academy Award.

Glaudé explained to EUR’s Ny MaGee that Mo’Nique signed on to star in “The Reading” after reading the script for his feature debut. At the time, he hadn’t raised enough funds to shoot the film, which Mo told him not to stress about because the financial issue would ultimately work itself out (and it did)– especially with a cultural icon like Mo’Nique attached to the project.

Hear what Glaudé had to say about collaborating with Mo’Nique and Lee Daniels in the video exclusive below.
