Black Employees at Google Earn $20K Less Than White Colleagues

*Google employees who are Black earn $20,000 less on average than their white colleagues, according to a leaked spreadsheet.

An internal Google spreadsheet obtained by Insider reveals that over 12,000 U.S. staff reported their salaries in 2022. Software engineers, business analysts, salespeople, and legal counsel are all included in the data. 

There is a $20,000 difference between the salaries of Black and white workers at Google, with Black workers earning $147,000 and white workers earning $170,000, as reported by People of Color in Tech.

Moreover, white employees received $40,000 more in equity than Black workers, with whites earning $92,000 and Blacks earning $50,500.

There were also differences in bonuses, with white workers earning $31,140 and Black workers earning $25,000.

We reported previously that a lawsuit filed against Google in 2022 accuses the company of systemic bias against Black employees. The suit filed by April Curley alleges that the tech giant puts Black staffers in low-paying, low-level positions.

According to Reuters, the lawsuit claims Google maintains a “racially biased corporate culture” that favors white men. The complaint notes that Black employees “make up only 4.4 percent of employees and only 3 percent of leadership,” per the report.

Additionally, “Google subjected Black people to a hostile work environment, often requiring them to show identification or be questioned by security at its Mountain View, California campus,” the outlet writes. 

Gebru, who is Black, was fired by Google for criticizing the company’s lack of diversity.

Curley said Google hired her in 2014 as a “marketing ploy” Her supervisors are described in the lawsuit as the typical anti-Black racists who are most often tapped to lead tech companies. The plaintiff said her bosses labeled her an “angry” Black woman and denied her promotion. She was fired in the fall of 2020 after she and several colleagues created a list of reforms that they suggested the company implement, according to the report. 

“While Google claims that they were looking to increase diversity, they were actually undervaluing, underpaying and mistreating their Black employees,” Ben Crump, Curley’s lawyer, previously said in a statement, according to Reuters.

Google reportedly told employees who complained about racism and sexism to take mental health leave, NBC reported.
