White Author Loses Agent, Book Deal After Review-Bombing BIPOC Authors

*A white book author has lost book deals after creating fake profiles online to give negative reviews to authors of color.

Cait Corrain claims she was battling mental illness during her recent Goodreads review bombing scandal, which saw her leaving negative reviews for BIPOC authors on Goodreads. This acronym stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Some of the authors she attacked were Molly Chang, Kamilah Cole, K. M. Enright, and Bethany Baptiste, Sky Pop reports.

Corrain took to X/Twitter to apologize and reveal she’s been battling depression and substance issues since 2022. She said, “Since June 2022 I’ve been fighting a losing battle against depression, alcoholism and substance abuse… In late November, 2023, I started a new medication, and on December 2nd, 2023, I suffered a complete psychological breakdown… I boosted the rating of my book, bombed the ratings of several fellow debut authors, and left reviews that ranged from kind of mean to downright abusive.”

As Sky Pop reports, Corrain added, “I accept responsibility for the pain and suffering I caused.”

Meanwhile, Corrain’s US and UK publishers, Del Rey and Daphne Press, canceled the 2024 release of her book “Crown of Starlight.”  Her agent, Rebecca Podos, announced on social media that she will “not be continuing our (their) partnership moving forward.”

Goodreads also confirmed on X that Corrain’s fake reviews were removed, according to Sky Pop.

Some of the criticism on X/Twitter include, “The excusing of Cait Corrain’s racist behavior begins just like clockwork. This faux concern isn’t about contracts,” one user wrote. “It’s that she thinks consequences for one’s actions are for certain people only (hint: those who don’t look like her).”

Another person added, “I guarantee, this is Cait Corrain’s next gameplan, so pay attention: 1. Drop outta public sight for a couple of years (outta sight = outta mind); 2. Change both her pen name AND the title of her book(s); 3. Re-debut under new pen name/title(s) while remaining hidden from public.”

A third X user wrote, “I wish all the authors targeted by Cait Corrain nothing but the ultimate success. This story is wild and yet a tale as old as time. POC getting their chance should not be seen as a threat but it is by so many.”
