95th Annual Academy Awards Recap – Good & Bad | Video

*Last night was Hollywood’s biggest night!

Yes, we’re speaking of the Oscars. But for some, it was also the biggest night of disappointments.

The culture was rooting for Angela Bassett since her nomination was announced back in January. After seeing her captivating performance in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” fans were sure she would be taking home a statute this year. All of the actors in the category for Best Supporting Actress had great performances.

But fans felt it was Bassett’s time especially after being snubbed for her role as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” Unfortunately, she did not win at last night’s Oscars, the award went to Jamie Lee Curtis instead.

After the loss, presenters, Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors showed their support to Bassett before presenting. Jordan acknowledged her with a, “hey auntie!” His infamous line from “Black Panther.” Jonathan followed up with “we love you!” As we all do!

Even though that was a big blow there were some excellent moments from last night.

Costume designer Ruth Carter became the first Black woman to have won two Oscars. She won again for her work on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” During her acceptance speech, she thanked the academy for recognizing the superhero in Black women. She also revealed that she recently lost her mother a week before the awards, saying “this past week Mabel Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for the moment. Chadwick, please take care of mom.”

As you know Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 and in the film, there is a funeral scene to honor Chadwick and his character T’challa’s loss. In the film, Queen Ramonda, played by Basset, also passes. These moments are the moments that helped Carter with the loss of her mother.

Not only did Carter recognize Chadwick, but Rihanna also had a moving performance of her song “Life Me Up.” The title track of the film – which was also nominated for Song Of The Year.

The night’s big winner was the film “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Sweeping the awards and taking home two of the biggest awards of the night, Best Picture and Best Actress In A Leading Role.

Asian American actress Michelle Yeoh took home the Oscar for her leading role in the film. During her backstage interview, she acknowledges her win represents all people of color. “This is for the Asian community and anyone who has been identified as a minority.  We deserve to be heard; we deserve to be seen; we deserve to have equal opportunity so we can have a seat at the table,” said Yeoh.

The Oscars were more diverse this year which is a continued step in the right direction for people of color who haven’t been recognized as much in the entertainment industry.

Congratulations to all of the winners of last night’s 95th annual Academy Awards.
