Weekend Watch: Endearing ‘Puss in Boots’ and Dreadful ‘Babylon’ | VIDEOs

Right in time for the holidays, DreamWorks Animation brings back to the screen the endearing feline swashbuckler, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” This time, however, the fear-defying feline is terrified of the future. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (PiB),” the once daring outlaw, discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. “PiB” has burned through eight of his nine lives, and lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send “Puss in Boots” on his grandest quest yet.

Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the infamous “PiB” as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, “PiB” will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek). In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided—against their better judgment—by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén).

The three will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Florence Pugh), and the Three Bears Crime Family. Most terrifying on his trail is bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura). Big fun is to be had by the whole family tagging along with “PiB” on his whimsical adventure.

Samson Kayo, Olivia Colman, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Ray Winstone also lend their voices. “PiB” is directed by Joel Crawford.

Avoid “Babylon” at all costs. Instead of an R-rating, this piece of trash should have the biohazard symbol attached to it.

“Babylon” obviously received its inspiration from the film “Caligula,” based on the reign of the eponymous Roman Emperor Caligula. He declared himself a god and began a four-year reign of depravity.

“Babylon” is depraved, and the debauchery is, no doubt, mainly for shock value because it serves no other purpose.

Director Damien Chazelle proves once again, when there is a lack of creativity and substance, go for the sex and outrageous behavior. The title allowed its creator to run amuck. Babylon symbolizes evil and wickedness.

During an orgy at a mansion owned by studio mogul Don Wallach (Jeff Garlin), serving as a symbol of showbiz decadence during the silent-film era, there is the defecation, excessive body fluids exchanged, vomit, urination, and of course unbridled sex between numerous partygoers. And things haven’t changed much since the late 1920s and early 30s because the nudity is primarily of women—no frontal nudity for men.

Needless to say, there are no likable characters, which is important for a film’s appeal. Nellie LaRoy is the most detestable of them all. Margot Robbie, most noted for the notorious Harley Quinn, is LaRoy. This three-hour assault of the senses also stars Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Elinor St. John, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li.
