I took a family road trip to the northernmost point of California to ‘see the snow’ and this vehicle was actually quite perfect for the variety of terrain we encountered. From the highway to dirt roads, and ice, we managed to experience this highly equipped compact (2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV) SUV with four-wheel drive in all of the ways it is meant to be driven.

This new take on a hybrid SUV is a great way to transition from all gas to something more eco-friendly because of its gas-saving abilities and uncompromising style. One of my general gripes with hybrid and electric vehicles is that they often lack style and power. Not this one. It maintains a great look, driving power, and comfort. Plus, it’s a plug-in hybrid, which gives drivers options. The Tucson is packed with all the fabulous features that make a car high-tech and fun to drive. Let’s get into it.

Technology to the max: Safety features mostly come standard in vehicles these days, which is great. One of my favorite tech features in the Tucson PHEV Limited is the Highway Drive Assist. Activated with cruise control, the vehicle becomes a more active participant in the driving experience, slowing and speeding according to traffic, and assistive steering to ensure safety. But it definitely reminds you to keep your hands on the wheel if it catches you taking too many risks. It’s not a self-driving Tesla. But it does feel pretty good to get the extra help on long drives.

Also, I was pleased to discover its Multi-Mode Air Technology. When driving with several people in the car, there is a great chance that someone might need some air while another needs some heat. Special vents control the climate in sections of the vehicle that help drivers and passengers maintain comfort, even with the windows down.

While I didn’t use this feature, owners can pair their Android phones with the vehicle and use their phone as a key to unlock and start their cars.

Four Drive Modes: It was great to play between the various modes – Eco, Sport, Smart, and Snow – but I found that Smart mode was the most useful and produced the best MPG. We drove up on Eco, with very little battery charge, and got 22 MPG. On the way back, however, we got over 32 MPG on Smart mode with about the same amount of battery.

Smart mode responds to your driving needs automatically, shifting the power accordingly. Snow mode made a big difference in driving security. Some roads were icy and with the change in modes, I felt the difference in stability, preventing unsafe sliding.

Comfy, Smooth and Spacious: For the long drive, as the driver, I felt held and quite comfortable for hours at a time in my seat. With climate-controlled seats, a multi-handle (my phrasing) steering wheel – the wheel design allows for a variety of ways to hold onto it, and the 10.25-inch display monitor, I felt in control of my driving experience. Passengers have a bit of autonomy as well with passenger climate control, comfy seating and a panoramic sunroof. Plus the cargo space was perfect for lots of luggage, groceries, and more. This is an SUV, but its size is manageable, not too bulky for regular parking spaces, and great for folks looking for something a bit bigger than their sedans.

Overall, this vehicle rides smoothly and is a great investment for those looking to transition from a gas-powered vehicle to something more eco-friendly and economical. With Hyundai’s great warranties and constant innovation in technology, drivers looking to save in the new year will find plenty of satisfaction with this one. The primary downside is ensuring the maximum benefit of its hybrid essence. Driving didn’t recharge the battery like other hybrids offer. Plugging in the vehicle is a must to get the maximum fuel economy.
