*The 52nd annual NAACP Image Awards aired last week and we are still in awe over the celebration of us for us!
Even though award season looks different this year everyone showed up and showed out from the comfort of their homes. The show was hosted by Anthony Anderson and they were performances by Jazmin Sullivan and the legendary Maxwell.
So many people were honored that night, not just celebrities. Our very own Superwoman Stacy Abrams won the award for “Social Justice Impact.”
This is well deserved after she made it her mission to increase votership and decrease voter suppression in the Black community. It is important that we not only recognize the people that make us laugh and cry on screen but to honor those who impact our lives in the real world.

Speaking of those that make us laugh and cry on screen, there were so many of our favorite actors and actress that were nominated this night. But there can only be one winner. We were in the press room to get the reactions of those winners. The winner of “Entertainer of the Year” shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone. DJ D-Nice, the man that saved us during quarantine, took home that award. While we were all stuck at home running out of ways to entertain ourselves DJ D-Nice came through with his sets during the week and weekends to get us through! “I just knew that for as long as we were going to be quarantined or as much as I could do it. I just wanted to be a source of inspiration for people,” says D-Nice.
Another source of inspiration is the late Chadwick Boseman who won “Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.” His wife Simone accepted his award with a tearful plea for those in our community to get checked for colon cancer. She continues to spread awareness and the importance of getting screened because African-Americans are 40% more likely to die from this disease.
As we continue to fight to been seen and recognized by other acclaimed awards shows, we will always have our own to celebrate us. Viola Davis had this to say about the Image Awards.
“Thank God for the NAACP Image Awards or else we would still stay in the cloak of invisibility. But I look forward to the day when we no longer have to teach people how to see us.”
