Watch Cynthia Erivo as Aretha Franklin in Nat Geo’s ‘Genius: Aretha’ Series [TEASER]

*National Geographic has dropped a teaser for their “Genius” anthology series on the life of the iconic Aretha Franklin

Cynthia Erivo stars as the late singer in the eight-part series, that will “explore Franklin’s musical genius and incomparable career – and the immeasurable impact and lasting influence she has had on music and culture around the world.”

Erivo, a two-time nominee at this year’s Oscars for Best Lead Actress and Original Song (“Stand Up”) for “Harriet,” spoke about taking on the Franklin role in a statement last December.

“Over the last few months, I’ve been preparing myself to embody the Queen of Soul, from relistening to her music to discovering her rare interviews and reading some amazing books on her — all to really capture Aretha’s attitude and spirit,” she said, per People.

“I’m truly humbled to be working alongside a very talented and musical team. Together, we’ll serve the Queen and create something special.”

Erivo previously explained the type of research she immersed herself in to prepare for the role.

“She has interviews, which I am just starting to discover, because you have to really search for them, interviews when she was younger because there is a really wonderful cadence she has when she speaks,” Erivo told E! News at the 23rd annual Hollywood Film Awards. “I am re-listening to all of her music because I want to learn her voice, and just reading because there are some amazing books on her.”

Franklin’s music will be included in Genius, and Erivo will sing some of the songs.

When the project was announced, Franklin’s niece, Sabrina Owens, praised Erivo’s casting.

“For Genius to honor Aretha is a great affirmation of her legacy, and Cynthia Erivo is an extraordinary talent with an amazing voice!” Owens said in a statement.

Genius: Aretha” will air over four consecutive nights starting Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.
