*Harriet Tubman’s great-great-great niece has responded to Kanye West’s comments about the famed abolitionist during his South Carolina campaign rally.
“Harriet Tubman…never actually freed the slaves,” Ye said. “She just had the slaves go work for other white people.”
Tina Wyatt addressed the controversy with TMZ, saying Kanye would be slaving on the plantation if it weren’t for Tubman.
“If we were left alone, we would be in an entirely different place,” Wyatt said. “She was selfless. She was already free. She didn’t have to come back—she didn’t have to risk her life, but she did it countless times. And if it hadn’t been for people like her, he would still be on that plantation. He would not be able to be out there saying the things he says and he wouldn’t have the money he has because they would have it all.”
As for what Tubman might tell the rapper if she were alive today, Wyatt said: “She would tell him, uplift.”

She went to say, “I don’t know where he’s putting his money. It seems like he wants to talk about a lot of things but the thing is, put your money into something that will uplift other people. Him [running for] president is not one of them.”
Meanwhile, comedian Dave Chappelle flew to Cody, Wyoming, to check in on Kanye following the rapper’s pearl-clutching tweets on Monday, PEOPLE reports.
West shared a video of himself with Chappelle, and he captioned the clip: “THANK YOU DAVE FOR HOPPING ON A JET TO COME SEE ME DOING WELL DAVE YOU ARE A GOD SEND AND A TRUE FRIEND ALL LOVE.”
In the footage, Kanye jokes with Chappelle to “please just make us smile, the world needs some, we need some joy, we need to smile.”
“We need some joke, something. Something to like lift our spirits,” he adds.
“S—, I don’t know, I’m still on my first cup of coffee. Let me think of a good joke,” Dave responds.
“An uplifting joke? You know I don’t do them,” he as their group of friends erupts in laughter. Ye adds, “Ah, that was it!”
“Thanks for coming out and checking on me,” Kanye can be heard saying as he gives his good pal a hug.
