Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards – EUR Exclusive/WATCH

*Earlier this week, Essence hosted its 13th Annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards at the Four Season in Los Angeles.

This year’s honorees were Niecy Nash (“When They See Us”), Melina Matsoukas (Director of “Queen& Slim”), Lashana Lynch (“No Time to Die”), the cast of the FX drama “Pose” and the show’s creator Janet Mock.

The red carpet was flooded with black girl magic as many came out to show their support and celebrate the honorees. Essence has celebrated black women and giving them a voice for many years. 50 years to be exact, as they celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary. During that time, they have given black women a platform to showcase their beauty, talents, entrepreneurship and so much more before mainstream media finally took note.

On the carpet at the Black Women in Hollywood Awards, I asked some of the women if they feel we as black women have finally arrived in Hollywood.

“I think there’s more work to do. I don’t think anybody’s just ok where they are, especially us because we’re just now getting in,” responded Tika Sumpter.
