Amaury Nolasco, Atkins Estimond & Norwood Dohn Talk Opioids & Cape Cod in STARZ’s ‘HIGHTOWN’

“HIGHTOWN” is the new STARZ TV drama that follows a hard-partying Jackie Quiñones, a Latina lesbian whose life is turned upside down after finding a body on the beach and decides to solve the murder on her own.

The series is set in picturesque Cape Cod with a backdrop of the rising opioid epidemic. Provincetown, Massachusetts is a coastal town that is known as a vacation getaway for the LGBT community. Jackie (Monica Raymund of Chicago Fire) is a National Marine Fisheries Service agent battling sobriety when she discovers a young woman’s body on the beach during a holiday weekend.

The series also features Amaury Nolasco ( Fox’s Prison Break) as “Frankie Alvarez.” Frankie is locked up but still runs the biggest opioid operation in Cape Cod. Though charming, Alvarez won’t hesitate to move people out of the way that interferes with his business. We also meet Ray (James Badge Dale) a sergeant in the Cape Cod Narcotics Unit that has been after Frankie for years, but he’s always one step ahead of Ray.

Frankie’s connects on the outside include his baby mama, Renee (Riley Voelkel) and his muscle, Osito (Atkins Estimond) a hardened gangster that has a tender heart for his solider-in-training, Junior (Shane Harper.)

Norwood Dohn (USA’s “The Sinner) portrays Alan Saintille. The only Black state Trooper on the Cape Cod Drug Taskforce – he’s worked with Ray for years but the two aren’t friends and definitely don’t see eye to eye on how things should be handled.

EURweb’s Jill Munroe talked with Nolasco, Dohn and Estimond about their roles in the upcoming series, why Cape Cod’s minority population is like and what it was like working with the cast.

Amaury – known for another role where he was behind bars, Fernando Sucre on “Prison Break” described the differences between the two characters.

“The complexity of these characters called me, they are all flawed, which is what we are in real life. We all have our skeletons and things, layers like onions… I don’t want to fall into the whole stereotype of Latinos and dealing with the drugs… there’s an old saying in Spanish, you can’t cover the sun with one finger. The truth of the matter is, we are related to that sometimes because, that’s what it is, sadly. I’m not portraying a role model in this show. And it’s not my job, although my people might disagree. When I look for a role – clearly I want to bring a positive – but I’m more looking for a role that’s challenging for me as an actor. And in this case, this is the one. This is the one I felt I needed to do.”

HIGHTOWN debuts on STARZ this Sunday, May 17 at 8pm.
