Valerie Jarrett Talks About Social Media And That Infamous Tweet

Tamera Mowry-Housley: I want to ask you about Twitter and social media.

Valerie Jarrett: Yes.

Tamera: We have a president that uses it to communicate in a very unique way.  Not to mention a sitcom star tweeted something vulgar about you and her show ended up getting canceled. So, do you think social media should have some kind of regulations?

Valerie: Well, first of all… I think we should regulate ourselves.

(The Real audience applauds)

Loni Love: Yep.

Tamera: Good answer.

Valerie: Use a little filter.

Jeannie Mai: Regulate a little…

Adrienne Houghton:  What a concept.

Tamera: Yeah, what a concept.

Valerie: Well, and also stop talking at people and talk to people.  And I think that’s where we’re stronger if we’re communicating and it’s a two-way street.  But, I also think there’s a role for government.  Because we ought to be able to combine free speech and privacy and all that.  But, also, keeping all of the misinformation out of the way.  Let’s face it, we know that there are a lot of people are in there spreading misinformation; we have evidence of that.  And so, I think there is a role for government. And if I were the social media companies, I would help government do that… Responsibly.

Tamera: I love that. There is a desperate need for that.  Desperate need.

Adrienne: Absolutely. With the bullying and all that, it’s needed.

Loni: Has that person been in contact with you since that incident happened?

Valerie: No.

Loni: Would you like an apology?

Valerie: You know what? What I said at the time, honey, is that look… It’s not about me.  I’m fine.  I put myself in the arena.  That’s part of it, you have to have a tough skin.  I’m much more worried about the impact that discrimination and racism is having on people who can’t speak up for themselves.

(The Real audience applauds)

Valerie: And so, why can’t we turn this into a teaching moment and have an uncomfortable conversation about the subject of race that I think, for too long, our country has avoided.  And so, I’d much rather look at it from that perspective.  What is this symptomatic of that’s going on in our culture that we can all change?

Loni: That’s right.

Valerie: All of us can do better.
