The Family Business That Put Nashville Hot Chicken on the Map

Nashville Hot-Chicken-1-of-8a

*Ralph Abernathy, the civil rights leader, once said, “Chicken is the best of all meals to serve.” He said this about the black community in the 1930’s and this was especially true on Sundays. This ‘Gospel Bird’ is preferred much more than pork chops, and it even surpasses steak or roast beef.

In his cookbook, Charles Davis had pointed out that African Americans don’t document their lives in the same manner as well-off people do. They don’t prefer white tablecloth restaurants and they would rather enjoy a bucket of Nashville Hot Chicken.

So who is behind this delicious story – one that is unmatched even by luscious lobster lore? What is the name of the genius behind this inspiring culinary phenomenon? Don’t you know? People eat at Nashville Hot Chicken because of the beautiful story behind it.

The Legend of Nashville Hot Chicken’s Recipe

Legend has it that a family called the Jefferies had spent a large part of their lives recounting a family story. This is also where they had inherited the fierce recipe – which is still a secret. The story goes to say that in the 1930’s, the family’s great uncle named Thornton Prince III was a pig farmer and was really handsome. It was also known that he was fond of women.

On one fine Saturday, Thornton Prince III came home late and as a result had angered his girlfriend. The very next day, when he asked his girlfriend to make him his favorite food – fried chicken, his girlfriend complied; but she was still angry. This is why she added her own furious twist to the recipe. She secretly saturated the chicken in a lot of spices which also included cayenne pepper!

Without a doubt, she expected Prince to suffer, and he did. But while his tongue burned, he actually enjoyed the experience! This is when he opened his own restaurant called the BBQ Chicken Shack and the word spread like wildfire in the black community.

The Recipe Is Challenging to This Day

If you search Nashville Hot Chicken on YouTube, you will find so many videos of people testing the hot chicken. You’ll find them asking for towels, tearing up, coughing, and going speechless. Some even forget to wear protective gloves and end up rubbing the red residue in their eyes – BIG MISTAKE!

You should definitely try this suicidal chicken for yourself. It isn’t a stunt food. It is a passion food!
