Should Botham Jean’s Killing Be Considered A Racial Incident?

Jeannie Mai: I also want to go back – I know, Loni – I get what you’re saying to focus on the police and the training, but I want to go back to when you said this isn’t a Black or White issue and then Adrienne, you just said it could have been any of us. I beg to ask that if you stood up from your couch when you saw the intruder walked in, would you have been shot? If an Asian man sat up, would he have been shot? I just want to break down the moment, like so you put your key in, for some reason her key opened the door that wasn’t hers –

ALL: The door was open, it was open…

Jeannie: Right so she opened the door, and the first thing you notice is, I mean when you walk into any of your homes, you notice that it’s not your home.

Tamera Mowry-Housley: The furniture?

Adrienne Houghton: The décor?

Jeannie: So let’s talk about that. But then this man is chilling, he’s at ease ‘cause he’s eating ice cream, so he’s not in an aggressive shape or form, right? And what allegedly he said was, “Hey.” So you could put “Hey” in 50 different tones. But it’s not, “Imma get you, Imma kill you, I’m coming for you,” right? This is a man, like, “Yo, what’s up? Like, you’re in my home.”

Jeannie: She also had non-lethal weapons on her.

Adrienne: Pepper spray…

Jeannie: So she has a gun, but she had other things. Pepper spray, you guys, you can spray from 10-12 feet. Ok. 8-12 feet! Tasers you can do 10-12 feet. I just want to say from wherever he was, she could have reached for the non-lethal weapon and immobilized him in the spot. But because of the way he went, all she did was see “Black man” and went for gun. Shot twice.

Tamera: She had a personal issue before.

Jess Hilarious: She knew who he was though.

Loni Love: This is the problem with the media. Everyone keeps saying “Black/White” and what I’m saying is that we have viewers that – they don’t necessarily emphasize… or have empathy for Black people. So when I say – yeah, I understand, she might have did, she had racial issues, but she never should have been a police officer – imagine if it was your family.

Tamera: Yes, agreed.

Adrienne: That the problem is, if you’re not Black, that you can look at the situation and say that could have been my uncle or my aunt. Define empathy.

Loni: Exactly. The minute you say “Black,” a lot of people just turn it off then. So what I’m trying to do when I tell you all this, so when you all come to, “Loni, you all not, you not for Black,” yes, I’m for Black people.

Jeannie: Of course.

Loni: But the purpose of this show is that we have more than just Black people, and I’m trying to explain to my non-Black brothers and sisters what we’re going through. So that maybe you realize it can happen to your family.

[The Real audience applauds]

Adrienne: So you can have empathy.
