Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger Sentenced to 10 Years for Murder of Botham Jean

*A Dallas County jury sentenced Amber Guyger to 10 years in prison Wednesday after convicting her of murdering her upstairs neighbor Botham Jean in his apartment last year.

Guyger, 31, had been facing between five and 99 years or life in prison. According to dallasnews.com, after the sentence was read out, chants of, “No justice, no peace,” broke out in the hallway.

We previously reported, after less than 24 hours of deliberation, a jury found the former Dallas police officer guilty of murder.

Guyger was indicted last year after fatally shooting her unarmed neighbor in his apartment, which she said she mistook as hers.

Deliberations began Monday afternoon after a week-long trial, which included the playing of the 911 call that Guyger made after shooting Jean as well as dramatic bodycam video from officers who responded to the scene.

Jurors were given the option of finding Guyger guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter.

“How could this happen to him?”  Jean’s father, Bertrum Jean, tearfully testified on Wednesday. “My family is brokenhearted. How could this be possible? I will never seen him again. I won’t see him.”

Jean’s mother, Allison Jean, who is from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia, addressed the jury during the sentencing phase about how their lives have been impacted by Botham’s death.

“My life has not been the same. It’s just been like a roller coaster. I can’t sleep, I cannot eat. It’s just been the most terrible time for me,” she said. “I’ve been sick often. I have to try to keep the family together because everyone is pain. I’ve had to seek counselling. I try to pray just to help me get by.”

Jean’s sister, Alissa Findley, also took to the stand, saying her mother constantly cries, and that her father is “not the same,” per Daily Mail.

“It’s like the light behind his eyes is off,” Findley said.

“I want my brother back. I wish I could continue our last conversation and just not let him hang up the phone,” Findley said.

Jean would have celebrated his 28th birthday on Sunday.
