Mo’Nique Takes on Role of ‘Badass Black Woman’ in Indie Flick ‘Mother Trucker’

Mo’Nique

*Mo’Nique has signed on for her next big screen project, taking on the lead role in the independent actioner “Mother Trucker.”

Written by former HBO executive producer J. Oyer Tomas, the story is set during the Congressional impeachment hearings to remove President Richard Nixon from office.

Mo’Nique plays a mother with anger management issues, who steals her suddenly deceased husband’s trucking haul to provide for her daughter. When she discovers the truth behind his death, she sets out for vengeance against his racist killers, Variety reports.

“I knew this was unique from the jump, because of the countless scripts we’ve read together, the only other time my husband said ‘this is special’ was for a little movie named ‘Precious,’” Mo’Nique said.

She added, “Never in my 30 years of being in entertainment have I seen a film with a badass black woman that has the balance of funny, drama, and action while addressing the challenges women of color face everyday, like ‘Mother Trucker.’”

Back in November, the comedian filed a lawsuit against Netflix for gender discrimination a year after calling for fans to boycott the streaming service due to the “low-ball offer” of $500,000 for a new stand-up special.

In court documents obtained by NBC News, Mo accused the company of offering her a “biased, discriminatory” deal for a one-hour comedy special, Page Six reports.

“Despite Mo’Nique’s extensive résumé and documented history of comedic success, when Netflix presented her with an offer of employment for an exclusive stand-up comedy special, Netflix made a lowball offer that was only a fraction of what Netflix paid other (non-Black female) comedians.”

The suit goes on to compare the “talent fee” to that of what men and white women earned for similar specials, including Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and Amy Schumer, who each received multi-million dollar deals for their work.
