*Jay Z and Beyonce keep proving they are the power couple to beat in Hollywood. Ahead of Jay Z’s upcoming President’s award from the NAACP tomorrow night at the Image Awards, Mr. and Mrs. Carter were feted another award.
The Vanguard award, given to the power couple Thursday night at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, was received with a lot of emotion.
Jay and Bey used their time onstage at the Beverly Hilton, while accepting the award, to praise the LGBTQ community … and members of their family who are a part of it.
Jay went first and shouted out his mother — who came out as a lesbian on his track, “Smile,” and received a Special Recognition Award last year — for allowing him to follow her shining example of love and acceptance.
“I get to follow in her footsteps for spreading love and acceptance and her beautiful speech at the end of the song — and for allowing me to tell her story,” Jigga told the audience.

Beyonce then praised her Uncle Johnny, who she calls “the most fabulous gay I ever knew” and says helped raise her and her sister, Solange. Bey says her uncle lived his truth and was brave and unapologetic when it wasn’t easy to do so … and witnessing his HIV battle was “one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever lived.”
She added, “Who you make love to and take that ass to Red Lobster is your human right” which was met with uproarious hoots, hollers and applause from the crowd.
Beyonce then turned to Jay-Z and praised him for making incredible strides in advocating the LGBTQ in the hip-hop community, which has a history of being homophobic.
“It is a privilege to watch you take those steps and to stand right next to you,” she said.
