Is it Worth Putting Your Items into Storage?

We all know that the longer we live somewhere, the more things we will seem to accumulate over the years! Sometimes, we might not even notice all the furniture, paintings, and gadgets we own until we have to move, paint the rooms, or even sell a few items to make some quick cash.

In recent years, more and more homeowners and renters alike have been turning to storage units to maximize their living space and to better protect valuable items. Storage units have existed in cities for many years, but what’s new and improved is the way to make it happen. There’s always a storage unit near you, as companies expand their locations and become easier to find online. They’ll usually give free quotes for storage, provide clear info on room sizes and security details, and some will even offer free pick-up and delivery of your items.

It’s worth noting that the prices per month will change quite dramatically depending on the size of the storage unit you’d prefer. For example, a 5’ x 10’ unit can cost around $130 per month, while a 10’ x 30’ unit will rise to around $500 per month. This goes to show that you must carefully consider how big the room should ideally be, as the prices will always reflect the size of the unit. It wouldn’t be worth paying for a large storage unit when you only need to fit a few boxes and perhaps a bicycle in there, for example.

What are the benefits of storage?

People choose to place items into a storage unit to simply free up some more space in their home. Particularly in a city like New York, space can be hard to come by, which means large items can be tricky to fit. Let’s say you’ve inherited some family artwork, furniture, or even something like a motorbike or bicycle. Until you figure out what to do with these things, like sell or even give them away, they will likely fit better in a storage unit than a city apartment.

Another advantage of choosing to place items into a storage unit is to see what life is like without certain things. Could you live without your TV, games console, and the clothing you haven’t worn in years? Testing your own determination is valuable, because it shows that you can live without particular technological items, especially if you want to focus more on exercise, nature, and reading, and less on watching Netflix and playing video games.

Storage units might also be helpful to anyone running a home business, especially for clothing, automotive parts, or artwork. Many of these things aren’t suitable to store in your actual home, regardless of how much space you have to live.

Any drawbacks?

There aren’t many drawbacks other than an additional cost to your list of monthly expenditures; however, if you can afford the price and are enjoy the freedom of having a room to place large items in, then it’s worth it. Some people might prefer to have their belongings close at hand at all times and dislike someone else holding them in a building. Yet, security measures like guards, locks, and surveillance cameras are all top-notch and you’ll have the option of insurance in case something does go wrong.

Granted, if you’re buying mansions, storage likely isn’t exactly a problem! Even so, even people with large houses turn to storage units every so often. Most of the time, people will use storage units for a few months – a year at most – and rather simply as a place to store things that aren’t really suitable for their own homes.
