*“Game of Thrones” fans, get ready to dive deeper into the fantastical world of the franchise, as HBO has announced a prequel about the Targaryens is in the works.
According to Deadline, HBO is nearing a pilot order on a second “Thrones” prequel series that is “set 300 years before the events in ‘Game of Thrones’ and tracks the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.”
The Targaryen prequel series is being developed by “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin, who suggested in May on his blog that fans could get hints about the series by reading his novel “Fire & Blood,” which was released last year. Martin wouldn’t reveal the plot, but wrote: “Maybe some of you should pick up a copy of ‘Fire & Blood’ and come up with your own theories.”

According to IndieWire, “HBO was originally developing five potential “Thrones” prequel ideas, and this Targaryen prequel is re-working an idea from those five, originally developed by Bryan Cogman,” the outlet writes
Another prequel series already is in post-production, starring Naomi Watts and set thousands of years before the original. During the Television Critics Association in July, HBO program chief Casey Bloys said the filmed dailies look “really good.”
HBO’s early synopsis of the first “Thrones” prequel said the series: “chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
Neither “Thrones” prequel series has a release date.
