EURweb on the Paleyfest Red Carpet: ‘Mixed-ish’ Cast Discusses Importance of Identity and Inclusion

*As ABC prepares to premiere their newest comedy “Mixed-ish on Tuesday, September 24, the network gave a sneak peek of the pilot episode of the series last Saturday during the Paleyfest Fall Preview at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills.

The viewing was followed by a moderated conversation with executive producers Karin Gist and Peter Saji alongside cast members Tika Sumpter, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Arica Himmel, Ethan William Childress, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Gary Cole and Christina Anthony who discussed the importance of bringing identity and inclusion to the center stage.

“Speaking from a place where I’m not mixed and I’m coming as a dark skin woman in 1985 working at a very white law firm, there is a lot of otherness and where we fit in as black women,” said Sumpter, who plays Alicia Johnson, Rainbow’s mother. “I’m happy to represent that space, in which I get to talk to Rainbow about specific things that she’s going to have to go through but also what is my identity? What does it mean to be black? What are two different types of black within the community with my sister? She’s on the other end of the spectrum. What does that mean for the both of us? So, I think we get to really tackle some of the things that we haven’t really done on TV.”

Although the show is set back in the 80s, Gist shared with EURweb associate correspondent, Anasia Obioha, how the show is still relevant today.

“We have Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) who does the voiceover for the show and the way we’re approaching her voiceover is that she is telling us a story about something she learned back then and how it is still happening now,” explained Gist.
