*Cynthia Marshall made history as the first African-American female CEO of an NBA team.
The newly crowned boss of the Dallas Mavericks said “We are committed to running a business of excellence,” in an interview with Black Enterprise.
“Clearly we have work to do, and I walk in knowing that there’s a lot that I don’t know. But I do know how to lead, and how to effect necessary change in an organization,” she added.
Marshall shared with Black Enterprise her plan for the organization, and it includes completing the internal investigation that was previously launched by Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. She also intends to meet with 141 employees and implement a process that transforms the toxic and dysfunctional culture within the club.

Marshall previously said during an appearance on ESPN’s “The Jump” that Cuban gave her the mandate to “transform the culture,” so she made it her mission to clean up the environment surrounding the Mavericks, after a scathing Sports Illustrated article highlighted the alleged culture of sexual harassment and domestic violence within the organization.
“I’m doing this, obviously, because a very passionate and heartfelt plea was made,” Marshall said. “It’s also personal. … I want to do it for the sisterhood.”
She noted that Cuban was a “person of integrity” which is part of the reason why she accepted the offer to join his team.
“What really made me say yes was this was my opportunity to actually be a part of the solution with a lot of other people,” Marshall said. “He was so transparent. … I knew I was dealing with a person of integrity.”
Marshall also dished with Craig Melvin of the TODAY show about stepping into the role when the organization was shrouded in controversy. She also noted the legacy she hopes to leave. Watch that discussion here.
